Pedro’s Judo Center hosted the biggest tournament ever in New England

Wakefield, MA: A total of 390 competitors competed at the 2006 Pedro’s Judo Challenge held in Wakefield, MA on February 18, 2006. Each Black Belt division winner was awarded $250 in prize money thanks to a major sponsorship by the Zebra Mats. As a result, the level of competition was very high at the event, including 2004 Olympian Rick Hawn, former Brazilian national team member Anderson Leal, and elite juniors Nick Delpopolo, Yuko Sin, and Gary and Harry St. Leger.

Pedro's Judo Center Competition team captured the team trophy, claiming 13 first places, 10 second places and 13 third places. Shirley Yacubowicz and Rick Hawn won their Senior Black belt divisions winning $250 in Prize money for their efforts. Shirley went 6-1 to win the Women elite 52 kg division and Rick went 5-0 to win the Men elite 81 kg division.

The Overall Team standings were as follows:

1st place - Pedro's Judo Wakefield, MA
2nd place - Mayo Quanchi West Warwick, RI
3rd Place - Jason Morris Judo Club Scotia, NY

On Sunday, February 19th approximately 90 athletes attended the 1st Annual Pedro's Judo Clinic hosted by Pedro's Judo Center and sponsored by USA Judo. The two session clinic was run by 1999 World Champion Jimmy Pedro and combined technical training and randori. Many members of the junior and Senior national team attended the training session, including Yuko Sin (JMJC), Nick Delpopolo (JMJC), Rick Hawn (Pedro's), Radu Bretsyan (Pedro's), and foreign athletes like Gerhard Zeitler (GER) and Steve Kneitinger (GER) to name a few.
