FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(New York City, N.Y.) – Radu Brestyan (Medway, Mass./Pedro’s Judo Center/73 kg), an Instructor at Pedro’s Judo Center in Wakefield, MA and member of the Pedro’s Judo Center Elite Team claimed the New York Open Judo title on Saturday at the New York Athletic Club. He was also awarded $1,000 in prize money for his Gold medal performance.

The New York Open is an annual elite men’s tournament that is classified as a USA Judo Senior C Level point event that draws most of the top Americans as well as an international field that includes Olympic and World Championship medalists.

Brestyan, a former Brown University wrestler, went undefeated throughout the day to advance to a final match against Samir Boucheraoua (FRA). The French player led throughout the match, but was disqualified for head diving.

“I went to counter his uchimata technique (inner thigh throw) and he went headfirst so they threw him out of the match,” Brestyan said.

Brestyan went 4-0 on the day en route to the 73kg title. He defeated Justin Imagawa (CAN) and Eduardo Novoa (CHI) with spectacular throws for Ippon victories (full points) in the first round and second round, respectively. In the semi-final, he threw Nick Delopolo (USA) with a kata garuma technique (fireman’s throw) for a full point setting up the final against the Frenchman.

With this victory, Brestyan solidified his position as the number 2 ranked athlete in the United States at 73kg and became the third member of Pedro’s Judo Center in history to win the NY Open event (Jimmy Pedro and Alex Ottiano of Pedro’s Judo also won the event in 2003 and 2004). Next-Up for Brestyan and other members of the Pedro’s Judo Center elite team is the Liberty bell Judo Classic to be held in Philadelphia, PA on the weekend of April 1-2, 2006.
